Light Floors Dark Stairs
Dark Hardwood On First Floor, Light Hardwood On Second Floor, What Color Should I Stain The Stairs?
Everything I've read says that it will be difficult to match the stain color on the pine stairs with the oak flooring, and that pine doesn't take dark stain well (turns out mottled). In my endless Google image searches, I found very few examples of people with dark first floors and lighter stairs. Non-runners: -Finish floors on first or second floor -Leave carpetI looked around this sub for other similar questions and came up empty so any help would be greatly appreciated.
How To Match Solid Stair Treads To Prefinished Hardwood Flooring
If you opt to use unfinished solid steps paired with your prefinished flooring, it can sometimes be difficult to match them. Choose the right type of woodThe first step in matching stair treads to prefinished flooring is to use the same wood species. For example, in our new home we use Sea Smoke from ADM Flooring. If we had ordered red oak steps, it would be impossible to hide the pink color of the red oak unless we used a very dark stain. When we were building our current home, I think I bought every little box of Minwax stain I could find at Lowe's. After applying it to one of the treads, I could see that it added the right amount of opacity, but Pearl Gray was too light for Padova. And it turns out I didn't waste any money buying that box of Pearl Grey. I found it matched perfectly with the flooring we installed in the new house, which is Sea Smoke from ADM Flooring. Apply the right amount of dye
With semi-transparent stains, it's important to control how much you apply. To do this, it is best to apply the stain with a rag. Using a rag I was able to wipe the stain away and achieve a very similar look. Left: stair tread with pearl gray stain
Right: piece of Sea Smoke flooring
Once I had the right amount of stain on the steps, I applied a coat of polyurethane, lightly sanded, then applied another coat of poly. Update
We've been in the new house for about two months, so I thought I'd update this post with a photo of our new stairs.
